AccesSurf asked the community, at large, about “What access to the ocean means to you?” From there, the Hawai’i Adaptive Surf Team chose their top 5 favorites and then the public voted on the TOP hashtag: #theOceanisMyMedicine submitted by Buster Kawasaki. Congratulations, Buster!
Hi, I am Buster! I am an Adaptive Prone Surfer. I was diagnosed with Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 6, in 2008. It is a condition characterized by progressive problems with movement. People with this condition initially experience problems with coordination and balance (ataxia). Other early signs and symptoms of SCA6 include speech difficulties, involuntary eye movements (nystagmus), and double vision. And I experience it all! After really feeling the effects in 2012, I’ve grown to promote Health. Fitness. Positivity. and Adaptation even more so.
YOU have the power to bring JOY to a person with disabilities. At AccesSurf Hawaii (ASH), our focus is on inclusion and creating a community that centers around the shared and healing experience of the ocean.
Through our accessible beach and water programs, we empower people with disabilities and their families.
Since 2006, ASH programs provide a safe and caring environment for anyone with a disability of any age, gender, ethnicity or financial background.
For many participants, ASH is much more than just getting in the ocean – it’s socializing, being outside and engaging in Hawai’i’s beach culture. ASH, together with a loyal group of volunteers, create long lasting relationships to share the beauty of the ocean with freedom it provides.
